Christian Philosophy of Education
I have been working on writing my Christian Philosophy of Education. Don’t worry, this isn’t how I spend my free time! As a part of the ACSI accreditation process and my certification process as a Head of School, I am required to write about my personal Christian Philosophy of Education. At first, I was dreading writing another paper, but as I investigated my thoughts and looked at our school and its mission, I found myself enjoying the work I was asked to complete. I decided to share a portion of my paper with the readers of this blog. I feel these paragraphs really explain what we are trying to do at CCA through Christian Education.
“Immersion in the teaching of God is an essential component of following Deuteronomy 6:7. True Christian education involves Biblical integration into every aspect of classroom teaching. Biblical education is not having Biblical worldview instruction silently siting in the corner waiting for its turn (Erdvig, 2021). Schools and their teachers to often compartmentalize Bible teaching and neglect the immersion that the Bible directs. To immerse the students in the Word of God means that every piece of content does not stand alone with a little of Jesus sprinkled in. In fact, God, and His plan is the content in which all subjects flow out of. We are able to reason and read because of God’s design. Math works because of God’s desire for order and symmetry. Governments rise and fall because of God, all of science exists because of God, and we enjoy the beauty of music and art because of God. In a Christian school, every morning, students should step into a unique world in which every facet of the school immerses their souls in the greatness and goodness of God.
For teachers and administrators to create the desired immersive Biblical environment they must individually strive to become the educators that God desires for them to be. This requires them to love God, love their students, and love their subject (Neff, 2016). When all three of these loves come together the educator can build a learning environment in which the students are surrounded by the things of God. If one of the three is left out, then the teacher and thus the school becomes something less than they desire to be and the student suffers loss. A true Biblical worldview school has staff that love God first and most, and out of that love of God comes a deep love of their students and their subject. Without this, Christian school education becomes something ordinary and fails to achieve the goal of helping guide children toward God’s will for their lives.”
